Rebecca The Musical is a fairly new musical, based on the famous classic book by Daphne Du Maurier. It’s on in London in 2023, the first time it’s been performed in the English language. Here’s my Rebecca The Musical: Theatre Review.
Overview of Rebecca The Musical
Rebecca The Musical is based on the book called Rebecca, by Daphne Du Maurier. If you’ve read the book, or seen one of the film adaptations, my Rebecca The Musical: Theatre Review won’t give many spoilers – although I still won’t give away the ending of the story.
Rebecca follows the story of Maxim de Winter’s new wife (who never has a name – she’s just ‘I’). Maxim used to be married to Rebecca, but she died a year ago – she drowned after a boat accident. Maxim meets ‘I’ in the south of France, and they soon get married. They travel back to Manderley together, Maxim’s home in Cornwall near the sea. However, the ghost of Rebecca in the house haunts the new marriage, and ‘I’ starts to uncover some of the truth.

What I liked about Rebecca The Musical
I enjoyed reading the book Rebecca, so I was looking forward to seeing a musical adaptation of it. And I enjoyed seeing Rebecca The Musical. I thought it was a good adaptation of the story.
I thought the actors playing the main characters were good, especially Mrs Danvers, the housekeeper at Manderley. She gave a really good performance and had a good singing voice as well.
The enjoyed the music in the show as well. There were a few songs that were memorable, and I enjoy listening to some of the music afterwards as well. I also liked the pacing of the show – I felt like it covered all the main plot points and didn’t overly rush anything.
What I wasn’t so sure about
I enjoyed watching this show, but I wasn’t completely wowed by it. Some of the songs were good, but others weren’t overly catchy or memorable. The performances of the singers were good, so I think it was just the music that was lacking in emotion at times.
I thought the staging could have been slightly better as well. There wasn’t a huge amount of set, and I thought they could have done a bit more with some of the staging. There were some good projections, and I understand that it was a smaller production at a smaller London theatre, but I think they could have done more to show the different scenes.
Would I recommend Rebecca The Musical
I would recommend going to see this show. My Rebecca The Musical: Theatre Review is positive overall, even though I wasn’t completely in love with the show. I still enjoyed watching it and I’m glad I went. And for any fans of the book, like me, it was interesting and enjoyable to see this famous story as a musical.
