Iceland in the summer is beautiful. The volcanic landscape comes alive in stunning green colours. It’s a great time of year for wildlife photography as well, with great birdwatching and dramatic waterfalls. Here are some of the best photos and pictures of Iceland in the summer.
Summertime in Iceland is one of the best times of the year to get great pictures of Iceland. Long daylight hours give plenty of time to get great views of the varied and dramatic landscapes. It’s easy to drive around Iceland to get to the best photo spots. There are so many places where you can get great pictures of Iceland in the summer.
Pingvellir National Park
One of the best places for iconic pictures of Iceland in the summer is Pingvellir National Park. This is where the American and the Eurasian tectonic plates meet. It’s a super dramatic landscape, with amazing, far-reaching views.
Iceland’s Golden Circle
Another highlight of any trip to Iceland is Iceland’s Golden Circle. This part of Iceland showcases some of the best scenery and natural sights in Iceland. One of the most impressive is the Geysir. This impressive jet of steam goes off predictably every few minutes. It’s a great spot for photos in Iceland.
The whole of the area around Geysir is a great place for pictures of Iceland in the summer. You can really get a sense of how alive this part of the world is with volcanic activity. It’s like you can see inside the Earth’s crust.
Another highlight of Iceland’s Golden Circle is the impressive waterfall, Gulfoss. This huge waterfall is amazing in the early summer, when there’s a huge amount of water gushing over the edge. If you’re lucky enough to visit on a sunny day, you can see the amazing rainbows as the light reflects off the water.
It’s definitely worth walking all the way around Gulfoss to see it from different angles and get pictures and photos from all sides.
Cliffs and seabirds
For more great pictures of Iceland in the summer, head to the Western tip of Iceland. The snaefellsnes peninsula is a great place to birdwatching and great ocean views.
You can see nesting fulmars and kittiwakes on the cliffs around snaefellsnes peninsula. It’s lovely to see the seabirds with their chicks on the cliffs.
Iceland has a huge number of waterfalls. Seljalandsfoss is one of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland because it’s one that you can walk behind. It’s a really unique experience to walk behind a waterfall, and a great place to take photos.
Puffins in Iceland
My favourite day in Iceland was the day I saw puffins. I took a day trip to Heimaey Island, and walked to the puffin nesting area. It was just amazing to see the puffins and take photos. Seeing the puffins on Heimaey island was definitely a highlight of my time in Iceland, and a great place to take photos.
Volcanoes and the Blue Lagoon in Iceland
The best pictures of Iceland in the summer have to include pictures of volcanoes. You can get some great photos from climbing up some of the volcanoes. As well as the great views of the coloured volcanic rocks, you can see across the vast landscape.
There are so many areas of geothermal activity in Iceland. But I definitely remember the strong smell of sulphur from some of them – which you definitely can’t see in the pictures!
The Blue Lagoon is another of Iceland’s most famous sights. The perfect, blue water is heated by geothermal energy so it’s a lovely, warm temperature for swimming.
The last of my best pictures of Iceland in the summer is from my day horse riding with Icelandic horses. These small horses are really friendly and cute. I loved getting the chance to ride them across the volcanic landscape and take some great pictures.
