Gdansk is one of the best cities in Poland for traditional Polish food. There’s a great choice of high quality and affordable places to eat. Here are my top places to eat in Gdansk, Poland.
I love the food in Gdansk, Poland. It’s definitely my favourite city in Poland to eat delicious, traditional food. There’s a good choice of restaurants, and these are really affordable. Eating out at a restaurant in Gdansk is so much cheaper than eating at a restaurant in the UK. As well as great restaurants, there are also lots of great places in Gdansk for snacks and sweet treats. And if you’re visiting at Christmas to see the Christmas markets, the choice is endless. So here are my top places to eat in Gdansk, Poland.
1. Pierogarnia Stary Mlyn
My favourite restaurant in Gdansk is Pierogarnia Stary Mlyn. This restaurant sells amazing traditional Polish food, with the best pierogi in Gdansk – and maybe even in the whole of Poland! The service is excellent, with all waiters speaking excellent English and happy to help you with the extensive menu.
My favourite pierogi here are the traditional Lepiochy. These are steam pierogi, and there’s also the option to have them fried in butter as well to make them a bit more crispy. There’s a big range of fillings, with lots of meat options and also vegetarian options. There’s a choice of sauces – I really enjoyed the mushroom sauce.
You can also get sweet Lepiochy pierogi, so you can order a combination of meat/vegetarian and sweet so you have some desert as well!
This restaurant also sells another type of pierogi called Piecuchy. These are large, oven-bake pierogi. Again, there’s a choice of fillings – and each Piecuchy pierogi is packed full of delicious filling. I had the cranberry sauce with these, which was lovely.
If you fancy a change from pierogi, I also recommend the potato pancakes here. You can get a huge potato pancake served with goulash stew and sour cream.
And if you’re visiting this restaurant in the colder winter months, there are some great hot drink options here. I really enjoyed the hot apple cider. And there’s also winter tea, flavoured with cinnamon and citrus.
2. Dobra Paczkarnia
For the best doughnuts in Gdansk, visit Dobra Paczkarnia. Fresh, sphere-shaped doughnuts are a speciality in Gdansk. And this small bakery is my favourite place to get doughnuts.
It’s best to get to the bakery fairly early, so the doughnuts are all freshly baked and you get a choice of all the different fillings before they sell out. It’s a great place to stop for a (slightly unhealthy!) breakfast!
The sphere-shaped round doughnuts are lovely. They don’t have a filling, but they don’t need to – they taste amazing.
There’s a big choice of other fillings as well. One of my favourites is the Nutella filling. The salted caramel is also great, as well as the Kinder Bueno. There’s also a cherry one if you don’t want something as sweet.
The doughnuts here are just delicious. Dobra Paczkarnia is definitely one of my top places to eat in Gdansk!
3. Gdanski Bowke
Another great restaurant to enjoy traditional Polish food is Gdanski Bowke. Gdanski Bowke doesn’t serve pierogi, so you can enjoy some other traditional Polish food here.
This restaurant serves meaty soups, and also pork Schnitzel. There are vegetarian options as well. But my absolute favourite meal here was the ribs. These flavoursome, meaty ribs are just amazing.
They’re served with potato dumplings (a big like gnocchi), and also sauerkraut (cabbage). It’s not the easiest meal to eat, but it’s so good.
Gdanski Bowke also has a great selection of local beers. So it’s a great place to try a local Polish beer with your food.
4. Billy’s Restaurant
Billy’s restaurant in Gdansk is an American restaurant, so it doesn’t serve traditional Polish food. But I thought the food here was excellent, and the location is nice too. So even though Billy’s restaurant doesn’t serve traditional Polish food, it’s still one of my top places to eat in Gdansk.
As you might expect from an American restaurant, the speciality here is burgers. There’s a big choice of burgers to choose from. I enjoyed the pulled beef burger, with fries and garlic mayonnaise sauce.
This restaurant also serves milkshakes which are really nice. And they also do the winter tea that’s really popular in Poland. The restaurant is set right on the waterfront next to the river. So it’s a great place to relax near the warm fire as you enjoy the view across the water.
5. Gdansk Christmas Markets food
The last of my top places to eat in Gdansk are the Gdansk Christmas Markets. The Christmas Markets in Gdansk run from late November all the way through December. It’s my favourite time of year to visit Gdansk. The pretty Christmas lights are lovely, but the highlight of the Christmas Markets in Gdansk is the food.
My favourite food at the Christmas Markets in Gdansk is Langos. This deep-fried bread is best served with garlic sauce, sour cream and cheese. It’s amazing! You can also get sweet versions with Nutella and banana.
Another great food to get at the Christmas Markets is potato pancakes. These are like a big hash brown – served with sour cream. They’re just great! You can also get Bratwurst – traditional German sausages. And there’s a range of freshly cooked Polish food as well, including Pierogi. And of course Belgian waffles, and mulled wine.
I love just walking around the Christmas Markets in Gdansk and trying all of the amazing food. If you’re visiting Gdansk at Christmas, you can check out my more detailed guide to the Gdansk Christmas Markets here.
