Top 3 Pizza Restaurants in Naples

Pizza in Naples is just the best. Nothing beats a fresh Neapolitan pizza, and there are loads of Pizzerias to choose from! Here are my top 3 pizza restaurants in Naples.

There are so many Pizzerias in Naples, it can be difficult to choose where to go. So here are my recommendations for the top 3 pizza restaurants in Naples. All of these Pizzerias are reasonably priced. In 2024, you could get a huge pizza for about 5 euros. So it’s really affordable to eat pizza in Naples!

These top 3 pizza restaurants are perfect for couples or small groups of friends. But they’re also great for solo travellers as well. All 3 of these pizza restaurants in Naples are friendly and welcoming to solo travellers. So you can just focus on the great pizza!

Here are my top 3 pizza restaurants in Naples:

1. La Locando del Grifo

My favourite Pizzeria in Naples is called La Locando del Grifo. This Pizzeria is located in Naples historic centre, not too far from the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli.

My favourite thing about this restaurant is the location. It’s set just off a main street, down a smaller side street. This makes it quite peaceful – or relatively peaceful, for Naples! So many of Naples’ streets are busy and hectic, so I liked that this restaurant is set a little bit back from the noise and crowds. The quieter location of this restaurant means there’s a lovely outdoor seating area. So you can sit outside in the warm Naples evenings to eat.

The pizza is just amazing. The classic margherita pizza is so fresh with so many flavours. The pizza looks huge, but because the ingredients are so fresh it’s manageable to eat. It’s not like eating the greasy American pizzas. I particularly liked the tomato sauce on this pizza. And of course, pizza is best enjoyed with a refreshing cold beer.

2. Starita

If you’d rather sit inside to eat pizza, then I recommend the Pizzeria Starita. This Pizzeria is slightly further out of the historic centre, so it’s a bit further to walk if you’re staying in Naples historic centre. But this means it’s not a tourist-y restaurant – you can tell that it’s mostly local people eating here. This restaurant still gets really busy, even though it’s a bit further from the historic centre.

The walk to the restaurant is nice – you can walk through a lot of Naples’ top sights, like Piazza Dante and the ‘Christmas Alley’.

Starita has excellent pizzas, that are served quickly. The fresh cheese and tomato is just so good.

3. Pizzeria da Michele

The last of my top 3 pizza restaurants in Naples is one of the most famous Pizzerias in Naples, and in the whole of Italy. Pizzeria da Michele has long been famous as the ‘best’ pizza in Naples. And it was made even more famous when the pizza scene in the film ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ was filmed here, starring Julia Roberts. So if you want to sit in the same restaurant where Julia Roberts ate pizza, then this Pizzeria is a must-visit place!

The fame and popularity of Pizzeria da Michele means it’s super popular. So expect to queue for a while to get in. The restaurant operates a good queuing system, where you take a number from the waiter on the door. And then you wait in the street for your number to be called. This queuing system means you don’t need to stand in a long line – you can stand wherever you want, and just keep an eye on which number is being called next.

The queue moves quickly – this isn’t the place to linger over a three course meal. This restaurant only really does two types of pizza – marinara and marghertia. And a small selection of soft drinks and one beer option. The service is quick, as they’re just making two types of pizza. So the queue moves quickly. And it’s definitely worth it once you get inside.

Again, I had the margherita pizza. And it was really nice.

Is Pizzeria da Michele the best pizza in Italy?

The margherita pizza at Pizzeria da Michele was really good. But, to be honest – I don’t think the pizza here was any better than the other two pizzas I had in Naples. I think the pizza I had at La Locanda del Grifo was maybe even slightly nicer. I mean, the pizza at Pizzeria da Michele was still amazing pizza. But I’m not sure it was so much better than any other pizza, to necessarily be worth the fame and the queues. I’m definitely glad I tried it though. And maybe knowing that it’s famous as the ‘best’ pizza meant I had higher expectations so I was more critical. Or maybe I was a bit fed up after queuing for half an hour when I was really hungry…

But it was still great pizza. And still definitely deserves a spot in my top 3 pizza restaurants in Naples!

Hope you enjoy trying my top 3 pizza restaurants in Naples! Make sure you check out my guide to spending one week in and around Naples. And also my detailed guides to the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Procida, and Pompeii. There are also lots of other great places to explore in Italy, including exploring Sicily without a car, visiting the Cinque Terre and Portofino.
