10. Singapore
Singapore is another great introduction to a busy Asian city. Walk along the waterfront to get photos of the iconic buildings, and also visit the spectacular Gardens by the Bay. There are so many sights packed into a small area, and the city is easy to navigate. There’s also amazing cuisine from all over the world here. Singapore is a great place to visit for a few days, especially as a flight stop-over if you’re on your way somewhere further away.
9. Reykjavik, Iceland
The Land of ice and Fire has some of the most amazing scenery on the planet. The capital city of Reykjavik is a great base to explore some of the volcanic scenery in the area. Hiring a car is best so you can explore, but there are plenty of options for day tours if you’d rather not drive yourself. Visit geysirs and waterfalls and go whale watching. It’s beautiful in the summer sun, but if you’re visiting in winter you can also join a tour to try to spot the Northern Lights. Read more about this amazing country here.
8. Melbourne, Australia
Melbourne is often cited as one of the best cities in the world to live in, and it’s easy to see why. There’s a friendly, laid-back vibe where you can enjoy the street art and relax with a drink and dinner in a restaurant on the waterfront. Melbourne is also a great base for some day trips to explore more of the area. You can drive yourself, or take organised tours, to the Twelve Apostles on the Great Ocean Road, or to see penguins on Phillip Island.
7. Queenstown, New Zealand
Knowns as the adrenaline capital of the world, Queenstown in New Zealand can give you experiences on your solo trip that you’ll never forget! Try bungee jumping, skydiving, or paragliding, with views of the beautiful snow-capped mountains all around you. Queenstown is a really fun city as well, and you’ll find plenty of hostels and bars to make friends, as well as the famous Fergburger burger restaurant.
6. Hoi An, Vietnam
The lanterns in Hoi An, Vietnam, make this a really special place for a solo trip. Vietnam is generally very affordable so it’s a great place for budget travel. Take a boat trip at night to see the lanterns, and visit one of the busy markets in the city at dawn to see everything come alive. Make sure you try some of the amazing Vietnamese food here as well. Find out more about a trip to Vietnam in this guide (affiliate).
5. Isle of Skye, Scotland
If you’re prepared for some rain, the Isle of Skye in Scotland is just beautiful. It’s best to have your own car as public transport is limited, and then you’ll have the freedom to explore as much as you want. Hike up mountains and to iconic rock formations, and find hidden white beaches on the coast. Keep looking out for wildlife as well, and you might be lucky enough to spot seals, eagles, killer whales and dolphins. Read more about the Isle of Skye here.
4. Seattle, USA
One of my favourite things to do in Seattle is enjoy fresh seafood at the Pikes Place Market, and then get a coffee from the original Starbucks. It’s lovely to walk along the waterfront as well, but make sure you take some time to go up to the top of the Space Needle for unbeatable views. On a clear day you might see Mount Rainier in the distance. Seattle is easy to navigate as a solo traveller and a great destination for your first solo trip. Check out my guide to Seattle here and consider extending your trip to explore the nearby Olympic Mountains and Mount St Helens.
3. Kyoto, Japan
Kyoto is a great introduction to Japan. The Fushimi Inari temple is beautiful, with its orange arches going up the mountain. You can also visit a bamboo forest and see monkeys. It’s easy to navigate as a solo traveller as the main tourist areas have signs translated into English, so with a bit of advance research it’s easy to get around. And it feels so clean and safe as well. The food is amazing too, especially the ramen. Check out the top things to do in Kyoto here (affiliate).
2. Prague, Czech Republic
Prague is a great city in Europe, and a great choice for your first solo trip. Relax in a pub with a Czech beer after exploring the castle, main square and Charles Bridge. Read more about the top sights in Prague here. Prague is also great at Christmas, when the squares and streets fill with Christmas markets selling delicious food and cute gifts to take home to your friends and family. 1. Bali, Indonesia
The final place in my top 20 worldwide destinations for your first trip as a Solo Female Traveller is Bali. This famous island is full of solo travellers and expats, so you’ll make friends instantly. Ubud is one of the key towns for travellers, where you can visit the monkey forest and the iconic Bali swing. But there’s more to do in Bali too, with beautiful rice fields, beaches, and the chance to hike to the top of a volcano at sunrise. Read all about it here (affiliate). It’s a magical island that will leave you desperately seeking your next solo adventure.
