The Cher Show is a newer musical that’s based on the popular songs by Cher. It tells the story of Cher, from her childhood to her rise to fame. Here’s my The Cher Show theatre review.
Overview of The Cher Show
The Cher Show is a slightly newer musical than many others. It hasn’t been on or touring as much as some other musicals. But it’s definitely still worth seeing. My The Cher Show theatre review will tell you why!
The Cher Show tells the story of Cher’s rise to fame. There are three versions of Cher in the show: her younger self, a slightly older version, and then the present version. These three all interact with each other and talk to each other throughout the show. Each section of the show is led by one, depending on the time frame it’s following. But the three interact with each other – it’s not like one just takes over from the other.
The show starts with Cher’s childhood, and shows her meeting and falling in love with Sonny. It tells the story of the Sonny and Cher show, and the dynamics of their relationship. And it also covers Cher’s acting work as well as her songs. And of course, Cher songs are interspersed through the whole show as well.

What I liked about The Cher Show
My favourite thing about The Cher Show was the music. I enjoyed the songs throughout the show and thought they were produced really well. I especially enjoyed ‘Believe’ and ‘Turn Back Time’. The dancers in the show were amazing as well, and I often found myself just watching the dancers and being amazed at how they could move. The storyline was easy to follow, so it was a fun, relaxing night out at the theatre.
There was a chance at the end of the show for everyone to stand up and sing and dance along with the performers on stage. There were some audience members who were very enthusiastic about this and really got into it! It meant that the show ended on a really positive, happy note and you could feel everyone buzzing from the energy afterwards.
What I wasn’t so sure about
I enjoyed The Cher Show, but I wouldn’t say I loved it. I felt like the plot could have been better, or developed more. The plot followed Cher’s life, but it seemed to move over life events quite quickly. And a lot of it felt fairly predictable – it was similar in a way to many of the other shows and musicals that follow a famous person’s life. There’s the inevitable challenges of starting out, the ups and downs of a relationship, and then making it big. It’s a nice storyline, but just felt a bit repetitive and predictable. I just didn’t find the plot very gripping. Even the parts that could have been more emotional, didn’t make me feel much emotion because they were quite quickly skipped over. I think the plot could have been developed a bit more to really get the audience emotionally invested in Cher’s character, and for me that would have made the show more enjoyable.
I also wasn’t too sure about having the three different ‘Chers’ interacting with each other. It made sense to have the character change over time. But I think it might have worked better without the three of them talking to each other. Having the three Chers interacting didn’t add anything to the plot, and made the whole show feel a bit more of a joke, which took away from the potentially more emotional or serious parts of the show.
Would I recommend The Cher Show?
My The Cher Show theatre review is mostly positive, so I would recommend going to see The Cher Show. It’s a fun evening out at the theatre, especially if you enjoy the music of Cher and enjoy listening to her most famous songs. Even if the plot isn’t hugely gripping or thought-provoking, it’s still a nice, fun show.
