Day 4 – Wildheart Animal Sanctuary and Sandown
Wildheart Animal Sanctuary
The Isle of Wight has a good selection of zoos, and these are perfect to visit when the weather isn’t quite good enough to be on the coast. The Wildheart Animal Sanctuary is on the edge of the pretty seaside town of Sandown, and a lovely place to spend a few hours. Check out the opening times and prices here.
There are some cute monkeys and lemurs at the Sanctuary, which are always fun to watch as they swing across their enclosures and sit watching the people. There’s a lovely picnic area here as well. However, the highlight for me was seeing the lions and tigers. I just love big cats. And the enclosures were really lovely here as well, with plenty of space and enrichment for the animals too. I really enjoyed seeing the lions and tigers here.
I’d recommend spending the rest of the afternoon in Sandown. You can stay in the car park of the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary all day, so you can walk down to the town and not need to find somewhere to park again.
Sandown
The beaches at Sandown are one of the top attractions. I loved the golden sandy beaches, and the views across to the white cliffs.
You can get an ice cream at one of the many ice cream shops along the beach. If the weather is sunny, it can be lovely to just sit on the beach with an ice cream and watch the waves in the sea.
Sandown Pier is another top attraction. The pier has a great selection of arcade games – one of the best on the island. I really enjoyed playing the bowling game, and air hockey.
There are also lovely views from the end of the pier, looking back towards the beach and cliffs. Another great ending to another great day.
I have always wanted to visit the Isle of Wright. I definitely am saving this post.
