Day 5: Monkey Haven and Godshill

Monkey Haven

There’s still plenty of things left to do in your final day on the Isle of Wight. I started the day at Monkey Haven. Situated just outside Newport in the middle of the Isle of Wight, Monkey Haven is a great place to visit for a few hours. There are lots of rescued monkeys here, as well as other animals like meerkats and owls.

I loved the capuchin monkeys, they were so active and it was lovely seeing them playing and swinging across the ropes in their enclosure. The macaques were cute as well, and the gibbons.

There are several talks throughout the day led by the zookeepers, and in some the animals are fed as well so you can see them up close. These are a great opportunity to learn more about the animals, and also their history and how they came to be in the rescue centre. There are some really sad stories of some of the monkeys that were used in circuses or illegally kept as pets, but it’s lovely to see them living a great life now. I loved hearing the stories about all the monkeys and their different personalities. Especially the capuchins, where we learned that the male chose to have two girlfriends, a mother and her daughter!

Godshill Village

Once you’ve spent some time with the monkeys in the morning, I’d recommend heading over to the nearby village of Godshill for lunch. Godshill is a really pretty little village, with thatched cottages and lots of tea rooms.

It’s worth walking up to the church as well. You’ll walk past more thatched cottages, and the church on the hill is really pretty. You can go inside the church as well and admire the ornate interior.

Back down in the village, try out one of traditional pubs or tea rooms for lunch. There are plenty to choose from, and it’s a lovely relaxing way to step back in time.

There’s also a model village at Godshill. Check out the opening times and prices here. The model village isn’t huge but it’s really cute and a nice way to spend half an hour or so. There’s models of the village of Godshill, and also a train that goes around a track and miniature people doing activities.

It’s a great ending to the best itinerary for 5 days on the Isle of Wight before you get the ferry back to mainland England.
