Six The Musical

Six The Musical: Theatre Review

Six The Musical is a fun, powerful and uplifting theatre show. It’s more of a concert than a musical with a story – but it’s still good fun to watch. Here’s my Six The Musical theatre review.

Overview of Six The Musical

Six The Musical features the six wives of King Henry VIII. There’s Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleeves, Catherine Howard, and Catherine Parr. Each of the six wives sings a song about their life, their time with King Henry VIII, and how their life or time with Henry VII ended. There’s not a huge amount of plot in this musical, so my Six The Musical theatre review won’t give away any major plot points.

At first, the six wives are competing about who had the worst fate. They compete over whether it was better to be divorced, beheaded, or die of natural causes. Each of the wives has a unique song that fits their character. But in the end, they decide not to compete anymore – and to sing united, rewriting their story to be the story they wish they had lived.

Six The Musical

What I liked about Six The Musical

I generally enjoyed watching Six The Musical. I really like the music – the songs are really good. And I think there’s a good mix of songs. Most songs are fun, with amusing lyrics and funny innuendos, and great dances alongside the songs. There’s one more soppy song, sang by Jane Seymour, which is my favourite song in the show. But the songs and dances are all really good. I liked the costumes as well – I loved how there was a Tudor feel to the costumes, while making them modern and sparkly.

I also liked the female empowerment side of this show. It’s focuses solely on the women of this historical period – and ends with telling their stories without King Henry VIII. The band and musicians in the background are also all women. It’s definitely a great show to showcase the talents and stories of these women, and women in history in general.

Six The Musical

What I wasn’t so sure about

While I enjoyed watching Six The Musical, I don’t think it’s up there with the best musicals I’ve seen. It’s really popular in the UK at the moment – it’s often on for weeks in each tour location and gets sold out months in advance, and it’s on in London as well. I’ve heard quite a lot of people rave about it, saying it’s amazing and they’ve seen it multiple times. But while I enjoyed it, I don’t quite understand why it’s so popular and getting so much attention.

For me, the biggest thing lacking is any plot or story. I enjoy the songs, but it feels like a concert of these songs. There’s not much story at all between the songs – it feels like it goes just from one wife to the next, each perform their song, and then there’s the big ending song. The whole show is quite short as well – about 80 minutes with no interval. So it feels much more like a concert than a musical, where the wives just perform their songs and then the show is done.

What I’d prefer

Six The Musical

I much prefer musicals that have a story and a plot. And I think so much more could have been done with this show. There isn’t much set or props – the costumes are nice, but that’s it. Apart from one song where they all put on glow-in-the-dark glasses, there’s no change of costume or set, and all six are on stage at all times. I’d have liked it to have more staging and set – they could have done so much more. And they could have done so much more with the story as well. Like adding more dialogue between the songs, more interaction between the wives, and just some more story.

I wouldn’t be in a rush to see Six The Musical again, because I feel like you can get 80% of the experience just by listening to the songs at home. There’s not much plot or set or staging or story, so listening to the songs really is the majority of the experience. And while the songs are great, I don’t think it would justify me wanting to spend money on seeing it again. I can just listen to the songs at home for free, while wearing my pyjamas and eating pizza, and still get the majority of the experience of seeing this show.

Would I recommend Six The Musical

My Six The Musical theatre review is a bit mixed, but overall I would recommend going to see Six The Musical once. I think it’s an enjoyable show, with good music and costumes, so it’s enjoyable to see once. But I definitely wouldn’t be in a rush to see it again, as it basically is just a concert of the songs, and anyone can listen to the songs at home. Unfortunately, I just don’t understand all the hype and rave reviews of Six The Musical!

Hope you enjoyed my Six The Musical theatre review! Check out my other theatre reviews for more shows in the West End, across the UK and the world.
