If you fancy a day trip or visiting another European city after Prague, why not check out nearby Kutna Hora or head over to Vienna?
Or if you’re heading to Prague at Christmas, check out my blog on Prague at Christmas for all the tips on Christmas markets. You can also check out this great guide to Prague ready for your trip (affiliate).
1. Old Town Square
The Old town square is one of the most iconic images associated with Prague. Dating from the 12th century, the square originated as a marketplace but is now one of the key tourist sights in the city. At Christmas, the square is filled with Christmas markets, selling all kinds of unique gifts and tasty food and drink. Check out my guide to Prague’s Christmas markets to find out more about this square at Christmas!
2. Astronomical Clock
Located in the Old Town Square, the medieval astronomical clock chimes every hour with large groups of tourists gathering to take photos and film the procession of the Twelve Apostles.
3. Charles Bridge
Another of Prague’s iconic sights, the beautiful Charles Bridge crosses the river, connecting the Old Town Square with Prague Castle. Like much of the rest of the city, it dates back in history to the 14th Century, and as you walk along the wide bridge you can admire the many statues (and many other tourists…be warned it can get very busy with tourists trying to pose for the perfect Instagram shot!).
4. Prague Castle
Dating back to the 9th Century, Prague castle is full of fascinating history with enough to explore to easily fill half a day. Just across Charles Bridge from the main centre of Prague, it’s easy to walk to the Castle and spend as long as you like there. Visit the castle website for more information about tickets and opening times.
5. St Vitus Cathedral
Situated within the grand complex of Prague Castle, St Vitus Cathedral played an important role in Prague’s royal history with the coronation of many Czech kings and queens taking place here. Find out more about the castle on their website, and make sure to visit when you’re at the castle.
6. Trdelník – Chimney Cake
One of my favourite foods to try in Prague! This cake is made from dough that is wrapped around a stick and then grilled. I liked it served just with sugar, but there are many places in Prague serving it with more elaborate toppings. Forget the calories and enjoy!
7. Jewish quarter
The Jewish Quarter, or Jewish Ghetto as it is also known, is an area seeped in history. It originally dates back to the 13th century when Jews were ordered to settle in this one area. There are multiple museums and synagogues you can visit to learn more – visit the website for a full list and ticket options.
8. Golden Lane
Another top sight that’s situated within Prague Castle, Golden Lane is a really cute, narrow street is packed with colourful buildings from the 16th century. The lane is named after the royal goldsmiths who lived on the street in the 17th century.
9. River Vltava
Like so many European cities, the river snakes through the centre and is vital to the city’s history and historical transport. Why not take a walk along the river at sunset, or take a boat trip to admire the city from a different angle.
10. Day trip to Kutna Hora
Prague is a beautiful city, but there’s no denying the centre is fairly small. If you’ve seen the main attractions and you’ve got an extra day, consider heading to the nearby town Kutna Hora – and see the amazingly unique and slightly creepy ‘bone church’! Check out my blog for everything you need for a day trip to this fascinating sight.
Prague is a fantastic city l, plans are afoot to spend more time there. The dig was made welcome in every bar we went in.
