1. Altstadt – Old Town
Innsbruck has a gorgeous old town centre with colourful buildings, some dating back hundred of years. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants to enjoy Austria food or relax with a cup of coffee while you admire the views.
2. River Inn
Built around the River Inn, you’re never too far from the river in Innsbruck. It’s a great area for a walk, and provides a lovely view of the mountains that surround this city (weather dependent!).
3. Goldenes Dachl – Golden Roof
One of the most famous sights within the Old Town is the Goldenes Dachl, or Gold Roof. Dating back to the 16th century, Wikipedia informs us that the roof is decorated with 2,657 copper tiles (I didn’t count them) for Emperor Maimilian I to celebrate his wedding and subsequently the balcony was used by the Emperor to watch events in the square below.
4. Innsbruck Cathedral
A day in a European city wouldn’t be complete without visiting the city’s Cathedral. Innsbruck’s baroque Cathedral dates back to the 18th century and it’s worth going inside as well to admire the interior.
5. Nordkette cable car
For views of the mountains surrounding Innsbruck, head up the Nordkette cable car. In just 8 minutes you’re in stunning mountain scenery, and if the weather is nice you can take advantage of one of the many hiking trails in the fresh mountain air.
