Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is a fun, and sometimes emotionally moving, musical. It follows the story of 16-year-old Jamie as he navigates life through school with a secret dream of being a drag queen. Here’s my Everybody’s Talking About Jamie theatre review.
Overview of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is a fun, warm-hearted musical. The plot of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is easy to follow, so my Everybody’s Talking About Jamie Theatre Review won’t give too much detail about the plot – it’s easy and enjoyable to watch.
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie follows the story of Jamie, a 16 year old boy. He’s best friends with Priti at school, and faces being bullied sometimes as he’s openly gay. After a careers lesson at school, Jamie confides that his dream career is to be a drag queen. He starts to explore opportunities to perform on stage as a drag queen, and at the end of Act 1 he realises his dream and performs. In the second act, Jamie continues to deal with the school bullies and also his strained relationship with his dad. He also tries to get the school to allow him to wear a dress to the prom.
What I liked about this show
I enjoyed watching Everybody’s Talking About Jamie. There were a lot of good songs, and I thought the dancing was brilliant. The actor who played Jamie was brilliant at the singing and dancing. And I thought Priti, who was Jamie’s best friend, was a great character too. Her ‘beautiful’ song was one of my favourites from the whole show.
It was a fun, upbeat musical – despite dealing with some difficult themes. I thought that the issues of bullying and gender identity were dealt with well. The issues were dealt with seriously, but without making the show feel depressing. I came away from the musical feeling happy and optimistic.
What I wasn’t so sure about
There were a few parts of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie that I thought could have been better. At the end of Act 1, Jamie is getting ready to perform in his first drag queen show. We see Jamie getting ready, in the iconic red dress. I was looking forward to seeing Jamie’s performance as the drag queen. However, the show cut just as he went on stage, and went to the interval. And then Act 2 was after the drag show. So it meant that the audience never actually saw Jamie’s performance as a drag queen. I felt like that was something that was really missing from the show, and was a disappointment not to be able to see that.
I also felt like Jamie’s relationship with his father didn’t get fully resolved. Throughout the show, Jamie’s father isn’t around, and then when Jamie finally goes to see him, his father doesn’t want to be part of Jamie’s life. I was expecting there to be a bit more of a resolution with Jamie’s father – or at least, some sort of closure. I felt like that issue was left a bit open at the end of the show.
Would I recommend Everybody’s Talking About Jamie
Overall, my Everybody’s Talking About Jamie theatre review is positive, so I would recommend this show. It deals with important issues in a fun and upbeat way, with good songs and dances. I wouldn’t say it was my favourite show ever – but it was enjoyable and uplifting to watch.
