Pembrokeshire coast in Wales

36 top photo spots in South Wales

13. New Quay, Cardigan Bay

Some of the small, coastal towns in South Wales are beautiful for photos. New Quay, in Cardigan Bay, is lovely in the sunlight, where the colourful coastal houses light up the harbour.

14. Pontiscill Reservoir lake, Brecon Beacons

Another of my 36 top photo spots in South Wales is the lake at Pontiscill Reservoir in the Brecon Beacons. Visit in the summer to see colourful flowers in the foreground of your photos of the lake.

15. Barry Island Beach Huts

As well as a lovely beach at Barry Island, there are also some really colourful beach huts. These make a great photo, especially on a sunny day.

16. St David’s Cathedral

St David’s Cathedral is in the tiny city of St David’s, on the Western point of Pembrokeshire in South Wales. It’s the smallest city in Britain, and feels more like a small town. But the cathedral is hugely impressive.

17. Llangorse Lake, Brecon Beacons

Llangorse Lake is a beautiful scenic spot in the Brecon Beacons. To get the best photos, hire a rowing boat and head out to the middle of the lake for an hour or two.

18. Pennard Castle, Gower Peninsula

Another fascinating castle in Wales is Pennard Castle on the Gower Peninsula. The ruins of this ancient historic sight are perfect for some memorable photos.

19. Barry Docks Lighthouse

As well as the lovely beach on Barry Island, there are some nice walks here as well. Barry Docks Lighthouse can be reached by a relatively easy 30-minute walk from the beach around the headland.

20. Pont ar Daf waterfall

The waterfall here is only a short walk from the Pont ar Dar car park. It’s not the biggest waterfall in the Brecon Beacons, but I found it really peaceful and a great spot for some photos.

21. Cardiff Bay

My favourite part of the city of Cardiff is Cardiff Bay. This area really comes alive on a sunny summer’s evening, where bars and restaurants create a great atmosphere. Walk slightly away from the crowds, and you’ll be rewarded with beautiful views back over the bay.

22. Dylan Thomas’s Boathouse

It’s no wonder that Dylan Thomas wrote such beautiful poetry, having seen these beautiful views. The boathouse is tucked right into the cliff, with amazing expansive views across the water.

23. White Castle

Another castle in South Wales worth visiting is White Castle. It’s often very quiet here, so you won’t get other people in the way of your photos.

24. Principality Stadium, Cardiff

For a slightly different photo spot, away from the coast and the nature that Wales is so famous for, head to the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. If you visit during an event, you’ll be rewarded with a fantastic atmosphere and a great alternative photo spot.

I spent some time living in South Wales, and I think it’s one of the most underrated places I’ve ever been to. It’s so stunning, evidenced by your amazing photos 🙂

We almost made it to Wales this past summer. Our daughter got Covid and we weren’t able to go on our cruise to Norway and had to scramble and find things to do and a place to stay for a week. Wales was on the list. Next time.

That’s such a shame you had to miss your Norway trip – that’s high on my list to visit! I hope you’re able to visit Wales soon, the scenery there is beautiful.
